Tasting notes

The Black Label is quintessential Tasmanian pinot noir with hints of cassis, dark cherries, cured meat and a dash of oak, this wine has a lot going on. Perfect for any dinner party or a special night in.

The 2023 Black Label Pinot Noir is a perfect blend of upper Derwent, Saltwater River and Tamar fruit. The wine shows great structure and subtle tannins. A cooler year helped to maintain amazing acidity while allowing fruit complexity to develop. The long growing season has really added wonderful character to this classic Tasmanian wine. Food pairing

“One of my favourite things to do at the end of the week is pick up a Chinese roast duck with a bunch of sides, crack open a bottle of the 2023 Black Label and hit play on an old movie” - James Broinowski

About the winemaker

Tasmanian-born James Broinowski completed his bachelor of viticulture and oenology at the University of Adelaide in ’13. He was faced with the same problem as many other graduates wanting to strike out on their own: cash. While others in his predicament may have found the same solution, his was the first wine venture to successfully seek crowdfunding. The first year, he bought enough pinot noir from Glengarry in Tasmania’s north to make 2100 bottles of pinot noir (which won a gold medal at the Royal International Hobart Wine Show ’16) and 200 bottles of rosé. The following year he was able to buy pinot from the highly rated Gala Estate on the East Coast, as well as a repeat order from Glengarry. In ’19, James added Saltwater River vineyard on the Tasmania Peninsula to his roster of premium single sites. The quality of the wines is seriously good, too.-JAMES HALLIDAY

Commendations for previous vintages

Wow. Small island, but a big pinot noir. Tasmania’s answer to Central Otago. The colour is deep, and both the texture and tannin structure are powerful. But amidst this feast of plenty, there is purity and restraint to the cherry fruit that emerges to claim the finish and after taste. Gold medal Hobart Wine Show & richly deserved.

Impressively deep and youthful red-purple colour; savoury aromas of forest-floor, fresh-turned earth and peat-moss. A smoky/nori-like umami aspect. The wine is powerful, intense and impactful, with a long-lasting tannins and persistent follow-through. A sumptuous wine with real class and Burgundy-like dimensions. Very impressive.

It fits into the perfumed steamroller category. It's light but powerful, pretty but not at the expense of substance. It looks as though Small Island Wines is a star in the making. Crisp red berries, under growth, woody spices, a svelte impersonation of plum, florals. Billboards of savouriness line the road of fruit. It's a brilliant wine.

    High praise indeed.

Mansticious, Evæncradocious, Scrumtoochio. These are just a couple of the words I have invented in an attempt to describe an ineffible quality of the Pinot Noir. Although I am not regularly a wine drinker, this has been known to change when Small Island Wines are on the table.

    Excellent Pinot Noir

I first tried this at a wine tasting event in Hobart and immediately fell in love with all of the Small Island Wines. The Pinot was a particular stand out, incredibly smooth, yet complex and juicy . You will not be disappointed!
