Mark on this one: think Nuits-St-Georges — broader shoulders and more power, a region with real depth and character. Medium ruby garnet with violet reflections; a hint of cloves and cinnamon, fine heart-cherry fruit, fresh orange zest. Juicy, elegant, round and very charming, with fine acidity and long length, and already easy to drink.

Two sites in the Coal River Valley: Marengo and Pembroke. Pembroke is a small, older vineyard planted largely to Pinot Noir. Marengo is the newer of the two relationships and does most of the heavy lifting.

Two sites rather than one block, which is deliberate. This is a Coal River Pinot Noir rather than a single-vineyard statement, and it is better for being a blend of the valley than a portrait of one paddock.

Set beside our Saltwater Pinot Noir at the same price, Coal River is the firmer and more structured of the two — closer to Nuits-St-Georges, where Saltwater sits nearer Marsannay. If you are choosing between them, that is the useful difference.
